This course was designed for doctors of chiropractic as primary care providers who may be exposed to a variety of skin conditions in the office setting during the course of chiropractic care. Doctors will focus on how to recognize common skin conditions that they may encounter in practice and the associated symptoms and management for each condition. Skin conditions should be co-cared by a dermatologist.

No textbooks required. Computer and Internet service required for completion of this course.

Course Objectives / Outcomes:

In this course the learner will:

1. Review how to recognize common skin conditions that may be encountered in practice.

2. Review associated symptoms and management for conditions.

3. Understand professional responsibility in addressing and referring noted skin lesions

Course Outline:

Hour

1 - 1.5 Unit 1: Cancer

This unit will cover skin cancers such as basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma. This section also includes a special co-care section that discusses biopsy procedures and what options the patient may encounter for removal of the lesion. This unit also includes a short section on Kaposi Sarcoma.

1.5 - 3.0 Unit 2: Skin Conditions in Children

Common childhood skin conditions covered will include common birth conditions and common childhood conditions that involve skin symtomotology. Conditions will include: chicken pox, measles, and Hemangioma’s.

3.0 - 4.5 Unit 3: General Conditions

The general conditions section will cover allergic reactions, eczema, ringworm, tinea versicolor, tinea pedis, poison ivy/oak, and shingles.

4.5 - 6.0 Unit 4: Indicators of Disease

This last unit will cover indicators of systemic disease such as butterfly rash, cafe au lait spots, and bulls-eye rash.

Evaluation Methods:

The learner’s time spent studying course materials is tracked electronically. A learning outcome examination is administered at the termination of the course materials. There will be at least three questions for every hour of the class. True/False, multiple choice, short answer and essay questions may be used. A final score of 80% or greater is required for completion of the course. Learners not achieving the pass rate will be directed to additional study by the instructor and allowed to re-take the examination.

To earn the full 6 hours of credit available for this course learners must complete the following:
1. Log a minimum of 360 minutes in this course by participating in each unit.
2. Answer ALL threaded discussion questions.
3. Take ALL quizzes/exams and score at least 75% on them.
